The Chennakesava temple at Somnathpur, completed in 1268, is the most intact of the great Hoysala temples — a star-shaped platform carrying bands of stone carving so fine it looks like metalwork. Quiet, compact and now UNESCO-listed.
Tip: Take a guide for half an hour — the carved friezes tell continuous stories that are easy to walk straight past.
