The UNESCO-listed metre-gauge railway from Mettupalayam climbs to Ooty through 16 tunnels and more than 250 bridges, using a rack-and-pinion system on the steepest sections. It remains one of the great railway journeys in India.
Tip: Seats sell out weeks ahead — book early, and sit on the left going up for the best views.
